Working Assets was founded in 1985 to help people make a difference in the world by doing the things they do every day. Each time you use one of our services — mobile, long distance or credit card — we send a donation to nonprofit groups working for peace, equality, human rights and the environment. To date, we've raised over $50 million for progressive causes. But we're not just donating money, we're making change. Recently, Working Assets has participated in the ACLU's lawsuit against intrusive federal wiretapping, registered over 1.5 million voters, and helped defeat South Dakota's draconian abortion ban.

Donations at No Extra Cost

Whenever you make a call with Working Assets, we donate 1% of the charges to the nonprofits we support. Each time you make a purchase with our credit card, we donate 10 cents. These contributions are made at no cost to you. The money comes out of our pocket, not yours.

Causes We Care About

The donations we generate go to nonprofit organizations working around the world for civil rights, economic & social justice, the environment, and peace & international freedom. Over the years we've supported groups like the ACLU, Greenpeace, Doctors Without Borders, Organic Consumers Association and Planned Parenthood, to name a few. Who decides where the money goes? Our customers play an important part. Every year we ask you to nominate nonprofit groups to receive funding. We evaluate the nominees, then our employees and board of directors select the groups for our annual donations ballot. Customers vote to decide how much money each group gets.

Activism Made Easy

At Working Assets, we not only offer great services. We're also one of the most powerful citizen-action groups in the nation.

In every phone bill, we update our customers on vital issues and give them easy ways to speak out — with a free call or a low-cost advocacy letter sent on their behalf. We explain what's at stake and encourage them to make their voice heard. And they do. Every month Working Assets customers generate over 80,000 calls and letters to Congress, the White House and corporate leaders regarding decisions of critical public concern.

And that's just part of the story. Through our online activism network, we enable all concerned citizens to speak out on causes they believe in. Last year our ActForChange activists sent almost 4 million messages to targeted decision-makers and won important victories for our nation. Together we blocked President Bush's ideologically extreme judicial nominees, protected essential food-labeling laws, and forced the resignation of corrupt Congress members Bob Ney and Tom DeLay.

To further strengthen our democracy, we helped register 200,000 new voters in 2006 and organized our landmark Election Protection program of volunteers, who fanned out across the U.S. to monitor polls and guarantee free and fair elections.
